Google Discover now sends 68% of all Google traffic to news and media websites, against 32% from traditional Search — measured by Chartbeat across almost 2,000 global publishers. You cannot submit to Discover: anything indexed by Google that passes its content policies is automatically eligible, with no Publisher Center membership and no application queue. For a Dubai business that means the levers are technical and editorial, not administrative — max-image-preview:large, 1200px-wide 16:9 images, genuine topical depth, and Arabic.
Most Dubai marketing teams have never once looked at the Discover tab in Search Console. That is the gap.
The UAE numbers that make Discover a Dubai channel, not a publisher channel
Discover is a surface, and the surface is Android and the Google app. The UAE happens to be close to the ideal market for it.
- UAE internet penetration hit 99.0% in October 2025, with 11.3 million people online — up 288,000, or 2.6%, year on year (DataReportal).
- 96% of UAE internet users reach the web on a mobile phone, and the country runs 23.0 million mobile connections — about 202% of the population, two SIMs per resident.
- Android holds 77.53% of the UAE mobile operating system market as of August 2026, against 22.46% for iOS, and Chrome holds 78.72% of the overall UAE browser market (StatCounter). Discover is the default home surface for the large majority of UAE phones.
- 48% of UAE internet use is categorised as keeping up with news and events — the exact behaviour Discover monetises.
Now the supply side. Chartbeat’s 2026 Publisher Playbook, drawn from 31.1 billion pageviews a month between January and July 2026, shows Google Search referrals down 40.2% year on year from July 2025 to July 2026, after a 21.9% fall the year before. Discover fell too, by 34.3%, but from a far higher base — and it fell less. Google Search’s share of all publisher pageviews dropped from 9% to 5% between July 2024 and July 2026. Google overall is now 25% of publisher traffic: 17% Discover, 8% Search.
Discover is now more than twice the channel that Search is for editorial content — and almost nobody in Dubai optimises for it deliberately.
One number worth holding on to, because it kills a popular 2026 assumption: AI referrals grew eightfold over two years and still account for just 0.01% of publisher traffic, and they declined across every major AI provider during 2026. Chasing AI citations while ignoring a channel that delivers 17% of your pageviews is the wrong order of operations. Do both — but not in that sequence.
What the February 2026 feed-only core update actually changed
On 27 February 2026 Google completed the first core update in its history decoupled from Search and aimed exclusively at the Discover feed. It started rolling out in early February for English-language US users. If your traffic moved in February and your Search rankings did not, this is why.
Independent analysis by NewzDash, comparing 25–31 January against 8–14 February 2026 on US English feeds, found the update pushed in four directions at once:
- Social surfaces took over. X.com’s Discover visibility rose 38%; X items in the US Top 100 went from 3 to 13, and in the New York feed from 2 to 14. YouTube and X combined held 62.68% of score-weighted visibility in the US Top 1000. Median shelf life of an X post in the feed: about 49 hours.
- Local relevance was rewarded. California-local articles in the Top 100 rose from 10 to 16. Local domains appeared roughly five times more often in their own region’s feed than in the other region’s. International publishers lost share — the international slice of normalised visibility fell from 8.52% to 7.04%, with Reuters down 20%, The Independent down 57% and The Sun down about 67%.
- Clickbait was demoted hard. Yahoo went from 11 articles in the US Top 1000 to 6, and to zero in the Top 100. Autoevolution went from 5 to 0. One listicle fell from roughly position 14 to 153.
- Headlines got longer and less interrogative. Average title length in the US Top 1000 rose 15.5%, from 72.9 to 84.2 characters, while question-form titles fell 13.3%. Category diversity widened from 163 to 173 unique categories, but the feed concentrated on fewer domains: 172 down to 158 unique publishers, with the top ten holding 76.65% of score share.
Be precise about the caveat: that dataset is US and English. Nobody has published equivalent Gulf feed data. But the directional signals — local over international, depth over curiosity gaps, longer declarative headlines, verified social surfaces eating slots — are exactly the levers a Dubai brand can pull, and the local-relevance finding is the one that argues hardest for genuinely UAE-specific content rather than globally recycled posts.
The actual eligibility rules, and what most Dubai sites get wrong
Google’s own documentation is short, and most of the agency advice circulating in Dubai adds requirements that do not exist. Here is the real list.
| Requirement | Specification | Typical Dubai site status |
|---|---|---|
| Indexed in Google | The only hard prerequisite. No submission, no approval, no Google News Publisher Center | Usually fine |
| Large image previews enabled | max-image-preview:large in the robots meta tag, or AMP | Very often missing — the single most common blocker |
| Image dimensions | At least 1200px wide and over 300,000 total pixels; 16:9 landscape | Frequently failed by CMS thumbnails capped at 800px |
| Preferred image declared | og:image or schema.org image markup | Often present but pointing at a cropped variant |
| Image content | No logos, no text-heavy graphics, no generic stock | Commonly failed |
| Titles | Capture the essence of the page; no clickbait, exaggeration, sensationalism or withheld detail | Mixed |
| Page type | Excluded: job applications, petitions, forms, code repositories, uncontextualised satire, SafeSearch-flagged content | Rarely an issue |
| Reporting | Search Console shows a Discover report only once impressions pass an undisclosed threshold | Absent report usually means zero eligibility, not zero data |
Two practical consequences. First, if your Search Console has no Discover tab at all, you are almost certainly failing the image or robots-meta checks rather than being judged on content. Second, Discover is not news-only: buying guides, comparisons, product education, seasonal advice, trend pieces and evergreen explainers all appear, and Google will pull an older article back into the feed when its topic trends again. A Dubai e-commerce brand, a clinic or a property consultancy is as eligible as a newspaper — it just has to publish like one.
The Arabic opportunity nobody is pricing correctly
This is the structural arbitrage in the UAE, and the numbers are stark. Arabic is the content language of only 0.6% of websites whose language is known, against 49.5% for English, as of September 2026. Meanwhile Google reports more than 100 million daily search queries across MENA, 54% of them in Arabic, and roughly 50% of UAE internet users search Google in Arabic. Around 2% of global marketing content is produced in Arabic.
Demand in Arabic is two orders of magnitude above supply. In a personalised interest feed, that asymmetry compounds: there is simply less competition for an Arabic-language slot on an Arabic-language UAE phone. If you run one content engine, run it bilingually.
What Discover readiness costs in Dubai, in real AED
Discover work splits into a one-off technical fix and an ongoing editorial engine. The technical half is cheap and usually unlocks eligibility within weeks. The editorial half is where the compounding happens.
| Workstream | What you get | AED | Timeline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discover technical readiness audit | Robots meta, image dimensions, OG and schema alignment, title review, Search Console diagnosis, prioritised fix list | 4,500 – 12,000 | 3 – 5 days |
| Image pipeline rebuild | 1200px+ 16:9 generation at upload, CDN variants, CMS fields, non-generic art direction | 9,000 – 28,000 | 1 – 3 weeks |
| Editorial engine and topical depth | 8 – 12 pieces a month, author entities, E-E-A-T signals, update cadence for evergreen pieces | 12,000 – 35,000 / month | Ongoing |
| Arabic and RTL content layer | Bilingual templates, hreflang, Arabic-first writing rather than translation | 15,000 – 45,000 setup | 2 – 5 weeks |
| Discover analytics layer | Search Console Discover tracking, GA4 segmentation, feed-vs-search reporting | 6,000 – 18,000 | 1 – 2 weeks |
| Ongoing care | Monitoring, update response, image and headline QA | 3,500 – 14,000 / month | Monthly |
Now the conversion maths, because this is the number that decides budgets. UAE digital ad spend reaches USD 2.64 billion in 2026, growing 15.2% this year and at a 17.7% CAGR through 2029 — roughly AED 9.7 billion chasing the same attention. The UAE also carries the highest average Google Ads cost per click of any country in the world, with commercial-intent English keywords commonly landing at AED 8 – 18 and financial, legal and real-estate terms at AED 20 – 50.
Price your feed traffic against that. Ten thousand Discover sessions a month, valued at a conservative AED 12 per click, is AED 120,000 a month of paid-equivalent reach — roughly AED 1.44 million a year — sitting behind a robots meta tag and an image-size setting. That is the cost of inaction, and it is not a rounding error.
How Aquarius does this
We treat Discover as an engineering problem first and a content problem second, because that is the order the data supports. The audit comes before the retainer: if your image pipeline caps at 800px, no amount of publishing fixes it. We rebuild the pipeline, wire max-image-preview:large and schema correctly, then stand up a bilingual editorial cadence with the Search Console and GA4 reporting that separates feed sessions from search sessions — so you can see which half is working.
Fixed-scope phases, a working deployment at the end of each. See pricing for how we band SEO and content work and services for the stack. Discover sits on top of the same foundations as everything else: Core Web Vitals and speed, schema markup, and getting cited by AI search. If you are replatforming, read website migration without losing SEO first — migrations are where Discover eligibility most often dies silently.
FAQ
How do I submit my website to Google Discover?
You do not. There is no submission form, no approval queue and no Google News Publisher Center requirement. Content becomes eligible automatically once it is indexed by Google and complies with the Discover content policies. If you are not appearing, the cause is eligibility or quality, not paperwork.
Can a Dubai business blog get Discover traffic, or is it only for news sites?
Any indexed site is eligible. Discover carries blog articles, buying guides, comparisons, product education, reviews, local topics, seasonal advice and evergreen explainers alongside news. The practical filter is whether your content clears a quality threshold on page-level E-E-A-T signals before engagement is even considered — so a thin service page will not surface, but a genuinely useful UAE-specific guide can.
What image size does Google Discover need?
At least 1200 pixels wide, more than 300,000 total pixels, and ideally 16:9 landscape. You must also enable large previews with max-image-preview:large in your robots meta tag, or serve AMP. Avoid logos, text-heavy graphics and generic stock. Declare the preferred image through og:image or schema.org markup.
Why did my Discover traffic drop in February 2026?
Google completed a Discover-only core update on 27 February 2026 — the first core update ever decoupled from Search. It rewarded local relevance, depth, originality and topical expertise, demoted clickbait and curiosity-gap headlines, reduced the share held by international publishers, and gave far more room to verified social posts from YouTube and X. Search rankings holding steady while feed traffic fell is the signature of this update rather than a site-wide problem.
Does Arabic content get Discover traffic in the UAE?
It is the least contested route in. Arabic is the language of just 0.6% of websites with a known language, while 54% of MENA’s 100 million-plus daily Google queries are in Arabic and about half of UAE internet users search in Arabic. Arabic-first writing — not machine translation of English posts — is what earns the slot, and the February 2026 emphasis on local relevance makes that bet stronger, not weaker.
